Getting Started Using Development Tools Using Lua
MCP lets an AI app you already use, like Claude, build in your worlds for you. You ask for what you want in your own words, and you watch it happen in the game. It can build a level around you and write its enemies' behaviours in Lua.
MCP is short for Model Context Protocol, the way AI apps connect to other programs. Your app connects to Chip N' Dale's with an address that's yours alone.

Connecting It
There's nothing to download. Claude connects to it in your browser, and its free plan can add one connector like this. Gemini and ChatGPT can connect to it too.
- How To: Connect Claude
- On claude.ai, open Customize, then Connectors.
- Click Add, then Add custom connector.
- Call it Chip N' Dale's and paste your address as its URL.
- When it asks how to sign in, choose No sign in, then Add.
- In a chat, click + at the bottom left, then Connectors, and switch Chip N' Dale's on.
Once it's added, it's there in the Claude desktop and phone apps too.
- How To: Connect Gemini
Gemini can connect to it if you're in the US, 18 or over, and signed in with a personal Google account rather than a work or school one. On gemini.google.com, open Settings, then Connected Apps, and choose Add a custom app. Paste your address and follow the steps. It works in the Gemini phone app after that.
- How To: Connect ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to it in developer mode, which you turn on in its settings. Then add a new app with your address as its URL and no sign-in. On some plans ChatGPT can only read through an app like this, so it can look at your worlds but can't build in them.
- How To: Connect Claude Code
If you use Claude Code, run this in a terminal with your address at the end.
claude mcp add --transport http chip-n-dales <your address>
What It Can Do
Your MCP can edit any world you can edit in the game, and do anything there that you can do in the editor. A moderator's MCP can edit every world, as the moderator can. It knows where you're standing, so you can ask for things right next to you. It reads the world, finds sprites in the palette, places and changes things, and writes enemy behaviours in Lua, reading their log when something goes wrong.
It can also take you somewhere to show you what it built, in the world you're in or another one you can edit.
Some things you still do yourself in the game, like naming editors and making or removing worlds.
It can make about ten changes in a row, then two a second. If it has nothing to do for ten minutes, it leaves the world, and comes back the next time you ask it for something.
It Edits as You
Everything your MCP does is yours, and it lands in the game straight away. Everyone in the world sees it happen, and the chat says Chip's MCP is editing this world, with your name.
The world's History, on the editor's map (press O), lists what it wrote as Chip (MCP). Revert puts the world back the way it was, just like it does for your own changes. Most apps also ask you before each change, unless you tell them not to.
Things to Ask
It works best when you're in the game, standing where you want something built. For example:
- Put a grass platform under my feet.
- Make a staircase of grey bricks going up to the right from where I'm standing.
- Add some Goombas along the long floor in this room.
- Write a behaviour that makes an enemy jump when I get close, and give it to the koopa next to me.
- Look at the script log and fix whatever stopped.
